Dear NN1.,May you live in wholeness and health! In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, it has come to my attention that you have been interviewed to join our hetaireia. 7.3.1.2. Induction Process⁑
Prior to the Katharsis at which a petitioner is to be inducted, the secretary, most senior member available, and at least one other member of the group is to be present early for the Katharsis, having set everything up ahead of time and then waiting outside the area where it is to be held for the petitioner to arrive.
If the petitioner does not appear for the induction on time but sends advance notice within half an hour (or up to an hour if the group agrees) that they are still coming, the group should continue waiting for them until they arrive or until the petitioner sends another notice that they are not able to arrive; if the latter, the group should proceed to the Katharsis without them and the induction is to be rescheduled.
If a mentor is already assigned to the petitioner, they are to act as the inductor, but if not, the most senior member available is to act as inductor. The inductor is to stand in front of the door as if to block it off with the door closed behind them, with all other members present standing to either side of the door or the path leading up to it.
Once the petitioner (P) arrives, they are to stand in front of the inductor (I) facing them, and the induction may proceed. The secretary or another member is to stand at the left side of the petitioner and, at the appropriate points, quietly coach the petitioner as to what to say or how to reply. At some points, all others present (A) may also be involved in saying something.
7.3.1.2.1. Greeting⁑
P: My name is NN1., and I am here. May you live in wholeness and health!I: Hail, NN2.! May you live in wholeness and health!I: You have petitioned to join our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis. I will ask you of our Entolai for hetaireiōtai, the members of the group to which we belong: you shall tell me if you will hold yourself to them as we do ourselves.I: Will you maintain your honesty and integrity in the hetaireia?P: I will maintain my honesty and integrity in the hetaireia.I: Will you be respectful towards others in the hetaireia and the hetaireia as a whole?P: I will be respectful towards others in the hetaireia and the hetaireia as a whole.I: Will you support others in the hetaireia and the hetaireia as a whole?P: I will support others in the hetaireia and the hetaireia as a whole.I: Will you keep the trust, faith, and secrecy of others in the hetaireia?P: I will keep the trust, faith, and secrecy of others in the hetaireia.I: Will you communicate clearly with the hetaireia, especially for coordination and collaboration?P: I will communicate clearly with the hetaireia, especially for coordination and collaboration.I: Will you focus on the work of the hetaireia while with the hetaireia?P: I will focus on the work of the hetaireia while with the hetaireia.I: Will you attend all events of the hetaireia as much as possible, but especially the Synodos for fellowship and community as much as spirituality and communion?P: I will attend all events of the hetaireia as much as possible, but especially the Synodos for fellowship and community as much as spirituality and communion.I: You have told me that you hold yourself to our Entolai for hetaireiōtai as we do ourselves; this is good.
7.3.1.2.5. Administering the Rules for Groups⁑
While the administering of the Kanones, Principles, and Rules for Members were intended only for the petitioner alone to respond (“I will…”), when responding to the Rules for Groups, all members present should recite them in unison (“We will…”). The inductor, however, is to continue addressing the petitioner alone.
I: We of the Hermetic Synaxis hold ourselves to a set of rules of conduct which support our work in the Hermetic Synaxis. I will ask you of our Entolai for the hetaireia, the group to which we belong: you shall tell me if you will hold yourself to them as we do ourselves.I: Will you be welcoming towards all people so long as they come in good faith?P/A: We will be welcoming towards all people so long as they come in good faith.I: Will you uphold and encourage the spiritual development of hetaireiōtai equally and fairly?P/A: We will uphold and encourage the spiritual development of hetaireiōtai equally and fairly.I: Will you do everything in this hetaireia oriented towards and for the sake of the Way of Hermēs?P/A: We will do everything in this hetaireia oriented towards and for the sake of the Way of Hermēs.I: Will you keep to and keep doing the ceremonies and events prescribed by the Hermetic Synaxis?P/A: We will keep to and keep doing the ceremonies and events prescribed by the Hermetic Synaxis.I: Will you reach out to and maintain good relationships with other hetaireiai of the Hermetic Synaxis?P/A: We will reach out to and maintain good relationships with other hetaireiai of the Hermetic Synaxis.I: Will you not affiliate with or rely on other organizations outside of the Hermetic Synaxis in an official capacity in this hetaireia?P/A: We will not affiliate with or rely on other organizations outside of the Hermetic Synaxis in an official capacity in this hetaireia.I: Will you support your broader community with charity and justice as reasonable?P/A: We will support our broader community with charity and justice as reasonable.I: You have told me that you hold yourself to our Entolai for the hetaireia as we do ourselves; this is good.
7.3.1.2.6. Welcoming the New Member⁑
I: You have prepared yourself according to the Kanones, and you have undertaken our Arkhai, our Entolai for hetaireiōtai, and our Entolai for the hetaireia in the company of others of our hetaireia who are your witnesses. In such company and being so witnessed, I, NN1., as your eisagōgeus declare you, NN2., on this <date>, a hetaireiōtēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis.I/A: May you live in wholeness and health, and may you walk in reverence and knowledge on the Way of Hermēs!
7.3.1.2.7. Presentation of the a Collar⁑
If it is the custom of the group to provide a hormos to new members, then the inductor holds up the hormos to be provided to the new member for all present to see.
I: It is the custom of our hetaireia to provide each new hetaireiōtēs a hormos, a hormos to be worn for our ceremonies, rites, and events. This hormos is to be donned after following the Kanones of abstinence, hygiene, and clothing, but prior to ceremonies themselves. As your eisagōgeus, I now give you yours to wear for this Katharsis.
The inductor then steps forward and places the hormos on the neck of the new member.
7.3.1.2.8. Proceeding with the Katharsis⁑
The inductor turns around away from the petitioner, opens the door, turns around back to the petitioner, and steps forward and to the right side of the new member opposite the secretary or other coaching member facing them. The inductor gestures towards the door and speaks to all present.
I: We now proceed to our Katharsis.
All others enter the room, followed by the inductor who leads the new member, followed by the secretary or other coaching member.
7.3.1.2.9. Assigning a Mentor to the New Member⁑
If it is the custom of the group to assign a mentor to a new member, then after the Katharsis and either during or immediately following the communal meal, the new member should be approached by the inductor who calls the attention of the group.
7.3.1.2.9.1. If the Inductor is New Member’s Mentor⁑
I: It is the custom of our hetaireia to assign each new hetaireiōtēs a hēgētēs, a mentor and guide and friend along the Way of Hermēs to help you as you begin your travel and travails upon it. I, NN1., who have served as your eisagōgeus to our hetaireia, am your hēgētēs, and I pledge to give you my assistance, guidance, support, and help as you might need it for our work.
7.3.1.2.9.2. If the New Member is to Consider a Mentor After the Katharsis⁑
If a mentor was not already assigned to the new member but it is the custom of the group to have the new member pick their own, and there is at least one person able and willing to become mentor for the new member, then at some point during or immediately following the communal meal, the inductor (I, name NN1.) is to address everyone with the new member (P, name NN2.) standing before them for them to pick a mentor.
I: It is the custom of our hetaireia for each new hetaireiōtēs to pick a hēgētēs, a mentor and guide and friend along the Way of Hermēs to help you as you begin your travel and travails upon it. Such a hēgētēs is to give you their assistance, guidance, support, and help as you might need it for our work. If there are any here who are able and willing to become hēgētēs for NN2., please come forward.
Any who are able and willing to become a mentor should then approach the new member and introduce themselves.
7.3.1.2.9.2.1. If Only One Member is Available to Become a Mentor⁑
After an introduction is made, the new mentor is to state:
M: I, NN3., pledge to give you my assistance, guidance, support, and help as you might need it for our work.
7.3.1.2.9.2.2. If Multiple Members are Available to Become a Mentor⁑
After introductions are made, the inductor is then to address the new member:
I: You need not pick a hēgētēs now. None here will be burdened if you choose them, and none will be slighted if you do not. However, you must choose before the next Katharsis in a month’s time.
Once the new member picks a mentor on their own, at the next opportunity in the company of other members of the group as witnesses, the new mentor is to state:
M: I, NN3., pledge to give you my assistance, guidance, support, and help as you might need it for our work.
7.3.1.2.10. Rejection⁑
If for any reason the petitioner has not held to the Kanones or does not agree to any of the administrations, the induction is to be aborted immediately. The secretary or other coaching member leaves the side of the petitioner and joins the rest of the group wherever convenient. The inductor is to announce the cause for aborting the induction and send the petitioner away, gesturing for them to leave. After this, all other members present are to proceed into the room for the Katharsis, followed by the inductor.
7.3.1.2.10.1. Unexplained Absence or Delay⁑
If the petitioner does not appear for the induction within at least half an hour (or up to an hour according to a group decision) without advance notice and the group agrees to proceed to the Katharsis, the induction is to be aborted, even if the petitioner arrives later. If the petitioner arrives after the Katharsis begins but without advance notice, the inductor is to inform them:
I: We waited for you to arrive, but you did not do so in a timely manner, and so you cannot be admitted as a member of our hetaireia at this time. We will offer you another opportunity to prepare yourself for another time, but for now, you must leave us to our work. Go.
After the Katharsis, the secretary/representative is to inform the petitioner as to why they were rejected and to offer them another chance:
Dear NN1.,May you live in wholeness and health! In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, I am informing you that, although you informed us that you were coming to join us on the Way of Hermēs, you did not arrive in a reasonable time nor did you send us advance notice of a delay. However, you will be given another chance to attend. Please respond and let us know if you can be present for our Katharsis to be held at <address> on <date> at <time>; if so, we shall eagerly await your arrival, but if not, let us know so that we might postpone until a later Katharsis as planned. As you prepare to attend the Katharsis, ensure that you follow the Kanones of abstinence, hygiene, and clothing for the Katharsis, to wit:* Abstinence:* Do not engage in sexual activity, violent activity, or lying for at least 24 hours prior to the event.* Do not eat meat, drink alcohol, or consume medically-unnecessary drugs for at least 24 hours prior to the event.* Do not consume anything but clean water for at least one hour prior to the event.* Hygiene:* Bathe thoroughly, wash your hair, and brush your teeth immediately prior to the event.* Do not put on scented or cosmetic products.* Clothing:* Dress in clean white clothes, ideally loose-fitting, modest, and in good condition.* Do not wear extravagant or ostentatious jewelry or adornment that is not explicitly for a ceremonial, spiritual, or deeply-held personal purposeYour timely response is appreciated. If you do not arrive on time for this second opportunity, a third shall not be provided. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.In reverence and knowledge,NN2.
At the next available Katharsis, the induction process is to start from the beginning as above. If the petitioner again does not appear for the induction within at least half an hour (or up to an hour according to a group decision) without advance notice and the group agrees to proceed to the Katharsis, they are not permitted to join the group for repeated lack of timeliness. If the petitioner arrives after the Katharsis begins but without advance notice, the inductor is to inform them:
I: We waited for you to arrive, but you did not do so in a timely manner, and so you cannot be admitted as a member of our hetaireia. This was your second opportunity to prepare yourself; a third shall not be provided. In the company of others of our hetaireia who are your witnesses, I, NN1., who would be your eisagōgeus reject you, NN2., on this <date>, from our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis. Begone.
After the Katharsis, the secretary/representative is to inform the petitioner as to why they were rejected:
- Dear NN1.,
- May you live in wholeness and health! In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, I am informing you that, although you informed us that you were coming to join us on the Way of Hermēs, you did not arrive in a reasonable time nor did you send us advance notice of a delay. This was your second opportunity; a third shall not be provided. As such, we must deny your petition. We wish you the best in your Way.In reverence and knowledge,NN2.
7.3.1.2.10.2. Not Holding to the Kanones⁑
In the case of not being able to follow the Kanones of hygiene due to emergent circumstances but all other Kanones are followed, for the sake of leniency, they should notify their inductor prior to the induction and be allowed to quickly bathe if a shower or bath is available, or if not, to at least wash their face, mouth, and hands with clean water.
Otherwise, if the petitioner has not held to the Kanones, they are not permitted to join the group for this event due to being unprepared.
I: If you have not held yourself to the Kanones after being instructed, then you cannot be admitted as a member of our hetaireia at this time.
In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, I am informing you that, although you came to join us on the Way of Hermēs, you did not prepare yourself as previously instructed according to the Kanones. However, you will be given another chance to prepare yourself. If you do not prepare accordingly for this second opportunity, a third shall not be provided. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.In reverence and knowledge,NN2.
At the next available Katharsis, the induction process is to start from the beginning as above. If the petitioner declines again any of the Kanones, they are not permitted to join the group for repeated lack of preparation.
I: If you have not held yourself to the Kanones after being instructed once and then a second time, then you cannot be admitted as a member of our hetaireia.
Dear NN1.,May you live in wholeness and health! In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, I am informing you that, although you came to join us on the Way of Hermēs, you did not prepare yourself as instructed according to the Kanones. This was your second opportunity; a third shall not be provided. As such, we must deny your petition. We wish you the best in your Way.In reverence and knowledge,NN2.
7.3.1.2.10.3. Rejection of the Principles or Rules⁑
If the petitioner rejects any of the principles or rules, they are not permitted to join the group.
I: If you will not hold yourself to the Principles and Rules of the Hermetic Synaxis as we do ourselves, then you cannot be admitted as a member of our hetaireia.
Dear NN1.,May you live in wholeness and health! In my office as grammateus/presbeutēs of our hetaireia of the Hermetic Synaxis, I am informing you that, although you came to join us on the Way of Hermēs, you did not agree to hold yourself to our principles and rules as we do ourselves. As such, we must deny your petition. We wish you the best in your Way.In reverence and knowledge,NN2.
7.3.2. Induction to an Existing Group as a Prior Member of Another Group⁑
After a member of a group has left or dissolved their group, they may petition to join another group of the Hermetic Synaxis. After deliberation, the secretary/representative is to inform the member about the decision and provide any further information as necessary. Should they accept the petition, then the secretary/representative is to instruct the member where and when to be present for a brief induction is to be done for the member, either prior to a ceremony (e.g. Katharsis) or on its own separately. For such an induction, the secretary, most senior member available, and at least one other member of the group is to be present early for the induction.
Once the member (P) arrives, they are to stand in front of the inductor (I) facing them, and the induction may proceed. The secretary or another member is to stand at the left side of the member and, at the appropriate points, coach the member as to what to say or how to reply. At some points, all others present (A) may also be involved in saying something. After the induction, any group event, if any, is to proceed as planned.
If for any reason the member does not agree to any of the administrations, the induction is to be halted. The secretary or other coaching member then leaves the side of the petitioner and joins the rest of the group.
