6.4. Koinōnia⁑
The seven planets of traditional Western astrology are important for the Way of Hermēs, forming the core cosmological framework in Hermeticism as well as playing a large role in the stellar mysticism and astral religion that underpins it. On top of making offerings to the seven planets as gods in their own right, one should also endeavor to engage with the planets in a more intimate way, going beyond simple worship to engage in personal communion with them. This helps one to go beyond merely developing a reverential learning of the planet and its sphere, but to experience the planet in its own terms, to uplift and empower the soul of oneself, and gain access to higher heavens in the course of one’s own Hermetic work. Although the ritual itself may appear at first to be a simple offering with added prayers, the actual work of communion is what sets this apart from a mere offering of flame and incense. Although the focus of theurgic communion in the Hermetic Synaxis focuses on the planets, other spiritual forces, realms, and entities may also be communed with, like the signs of the Zodiac.
The work of theurgic communion is to be undertaken on a regular basis by those in the Hermetic Synaxis on an ongoing, repeating basis. There is no prescribed time for it, beyond that one is to perform the work of communion at a time appropriate to the entity being communed with. Examples of this might be:
Planets: At least the hour of the planet, though ideally other considerations should also be made in addition to this.
Day of the planet
Zodiac sign of the planet rising or culminating
At an election of the planet
Zodiac signs: While the Sun or Moon is in the sign and the sign is rising or culminating, ideally in the hour and day of the sign’s domicile or exaltation ruler.
Decans: While the Sun is in the decan and the decan is rising or culminating, ideally in the day hour of the decan’s planetary ruler and the day of the sign’s planetary ruler
Regardless of the time, if it is at all possible or feasible to do so, stricter or more notable times are encouraged for the first time one engages in Koinōnia with an entity or for particularly important needs with them.
For the planets, unless one has a specific need to commune with a planet outside the usual sequence, it is generally recommended to proceed in the ascending order of the planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, then repeating with the Moon, Mercury…); likewise for the signs of the Zodiac (Aries, Taurus, Gemini…), decans (Khenlakhori, Khontharet, Siket…), and elements (Earth, Water, Air, Fire). One may do multiple communions of a given entity consecutively if one desires. Unless one has a specific need to do so, it is preferred to allow at least a week between Koinōnia rituals, whether for the same entity or different entities.
Unlike other ceremonies, as a matter of personal development, it is most recommended that this ritual be done on one’s own, whether or not one is in a group. However, this ritual may be performed as a group or with others, with the most experienced person acting as leader; if done in a group, this ritual may only be attended by group members.
6.4.1. Supplies and Tools Required⁑
A vessel of clean, cool water
If a loibeion is present, it should be used, but only after draining it and filling it with fresh water for the ritual.
Otherwise, a wine glass, goblet, or other drinking vessel is acceptable.
If performed in a group, a larger bowl of water should be used instead, and everyone should have their own cup.
Incense in a holder
The incense should be of a smell or blend of smells appropriate to the entity.
Self-igniting stick or cone incense is acceptable.
A light (e.g. candle or oil lamp)
If a candle is used:
Narrow candles (e.g. tapers) are preferred over wide candles (e.g. tealights, votives), with a tall narrow candle being ideal.
Candles may be left white or undyed, or it may be in a color appropriate to the entity.
Candles should be new and be left to burn out on its own.
If the light is in a glass container, the container may be colored appropriately to the entity.
Only one light is required for the ritual (if a candle then it should be a narrow candle), but other lights may be present as extra offerings arranged around a central light in an ancillary or secondary position (and if candles they may be wide candles, or if also narrow candles then preferably shorter than the main candle).
Oil
Olive oil is always acceptable.
If perfumed or seasoned oil appropriate or consecrated to the entity is available, one should use that instead.
One may use the bottle as a whole, or a small vessel containing a small amount of it.
A lighter or match
Drink, food, flowers, and other offerings as desired (optional)
Pen and paper (optional)
Stand and plate for the light for a telesma or agalma (optional)
Clean drying cloth for a telesma or agalma (optional)
6.4.2. Astrological Timing⁑
Although the Koinōnia is not strictly an astrological ritual, it is generally intended to be used most commonly for entities of an astrological nature, especially the planets. Because of this, special timing considerations with astrological approaches are commonly used for the Koinōnia, taking advantage of the ebb and flow of energy and activity of the planets and stars.
6.4.2.1. Planetary Days and Hours⁑
Among the most common approaches to ritual timing in Hermetic and Western esoteric practice is that of the planetary days and hours, a system that assigns one of the seven traditional planets as a ruler to each day of the seven-day week and to each hour of each day according to a regularly repeating pattern. The power of a planet is heightened on the day it rules over, even more in the hours it rules over, and yet even more in both its ruling planetary day and hour.
Each of the seven days of the week is governed by one of the seven planets:
Weekday |
Planet |
|---|---|
Sunday |
Sun |
Monday |
Moon |
Tuesday |
Mars |
Wednesday |
Mercury |
Thursday |
Jupiter |
Friday |
Venus |
Saturday |
Saturn |
A “day” for the purposes of calculating planetary hours is considered to begin at sunrise, and so the planet that rules over a day does not come into its rulership until the Sun has risen. Thus, if today is a Wednesday when sunrise occurs at 7:00 a.m. and the current time is 6:00 a.m., then the Sun has not yet risen, so Mars still governs the current day, since the new day ruled by Mercury has not yet begun. Because sunrise occurs at different times based on one’s location, the day of any two given places may start at different times.
An “hour” is not a standard clock-hour of 60 minutes. Instead, the traditional system of “unequal hours” or “seasonal hours” is used, where an hour is considered to be one-twelfth of the duration of daytime or nighttime, depending on whether the hour is diurnal or nocturnal. There are 12 diurnal hours and 12 nocturnal hours in a given day, for a total of 24 unequal hours. During the spring and summer, diurnal hours are longer than nocturnal hours, since the duration of daytime exceeds that of nighttime; the opposite is true during autumn and winter. The only times that the diurnal and nocturnal hours will be of equal duration is on the spring and autumn equinoxes, when days and nights are of roughly equal length.
To calculate the length of a day’s diurnal hour, divide the time between sunrise and sunset of the day by 12. Likewise, to find the length of a day’s nocturnal hour, divide time between sunset and the sunrise of the next day by 12. For the first twelve unequal hours, each hour starts at increments of the diurnal hour length starting at sunrise, with the twelfth and last diurnal hour ending at sunset. The second set of twelve unequal hours begin at sunset and use increments of the nocturnal hour length, with the twelfth and last nocturnal hour ending at the next sunrise.
The first hour of a given day is ruled by the same planet of the day itself. The hours that follow are ruled according to the “Chaldean order” of the planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon); this order is that of the relative speeds of the planets as seen from the Earth, with Saturn being the slowest and the Moon being the fastest. Thus, if the first hour is ruled by the Sun, the second hour is ruled by Venus, because Venus follows the Sun in the Chaldaean order. The third hour is ruled by Mercury, and the fourth hour by the Moon. Because the Moon is the last planet in the Chaldaean order, the order repeats, so the fifth hour is ruled by Saturn, the sixth by Jupiter, the seventh by Mars, and the eighth hour by the Sun again, and so on endlessly.
As opposed to elections which are a “celestial” of reckoning planetary timing, planetary hours are a purely “terrestrial” form of reckoning planetary timing; as such, this system is independent of any formal astrological observation, but is often used in tandem with such observations to better ascertain appropriate moments for ritual, as linking together the “terrestrial” planetary hours with a “celestial” election can better facilitate the power of a planet both on high and on low. While finding a decent election for a planet in a planetary hour can be challenging, especially given that elections for slow-moving planets can be years apart, it can be a simple enough thing to find a day and hour of the planet while a sign of the planet is rising.
6.4.2.2. Electional Considerations⁑
In general terms, an “election” is a time chosen to undertake or begin some work according to astrological considerations, when a planet is particularly well-placed (or at the very least not afflicted) both on its own along the ecliptic as well as in relation to other planets and the Earth itself. The considerations of timing elections can be elaborate and extensive, but some general qualities to aim for would be (either in combination with each other or some selection of them, although not all may apply depending on the need or quality of time desired):
The planet is ideally on the rising or culminating angle
The planet is visible and above the horizon
The planet has some positive essential dignity
The planet is not too close to the Sun to where it cannot be seen on its own
The planet is not in opposition or square to a malefic
The planet is in trine or sextile to a benefic
The planet is not retrograde
A sign of the planet is rising
The Moon is applying to the planet, preferably in conjunction but trine or sextile are acceptable
The Moon is fast
When consecrating a telesma or agalma of particular spiritual entities, it is also helpful to have the Moon in a specific sign associated with the entity. For the planets, signs, and even the decans, the Moon should be in a place associated with that entity, e.g. the Moon is ideally placed in Aries or Scorpio for a telesma or agalma of Mars or conjunct with Mars. For other deities that are not necessarily astrological, the following placements for the Moon may be used:
Tykhē: Capricorn, Cancer
Mētēr Theōn: Leo, Taurus, Capricorn
Demētēr, Persephonē, Ploutōn: Virgo, Taurus
Osiris: Pisces, Aquarius, Taurus
Nikē: Virgo, Cancer
Serapis: Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius
Asklēpios, Hygeia: Sagittarius, Pisces
Dionysos: Virgo, Capricorn
Hēraklēs: Gemini, Leo
Erōs, Kharites: Taurus, Libra, Pisces
Nemesis: Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra
It may also be helpful to have as many of the following considerations apply as well:
The Moon should be full (i.e. Moon opposite Sun)
The Moon should be in trine to Jupiter, and both should be in fiery signs
The Sun should be in trine to Saturn, and both should be in air signs
The other planets should all be in their domiciles or exaltations
6.4.3. Epōdai⁑
An epōdē (pl. epōdai) is a sound or series of sounds intoned for a spiritual effect. Each epōdē is associated with a particular entity, generally along lines of its cosmic force. Of the epōdai, the most important are the seven vowels of the Greek alphabet, which are given to the seven planets. While each of the consonants is given to an element or sign of the Zodiac, combinations of consonants and vowels are used as epōdai for their corresponding forces, including for the decans.
In addition to the epōdē, each force is also given with the name for its force as well as a deity classically associated with it.

6.4.4. Preparation⁑
If one is to consecrate a telesma of the entity, more lights, incense, water, and oil should be at hand plus the object to be consecrated as a telesma, along with a clean drying cloth. Consecration of a telesma is not a required part of the Koinōnia ritual, but is something that may be done during a Koinōnia for a particular entity if desired. If a consecration of a telesma is to be performed, it is best to only do one such consecration in a given Koinōnia, rather than multiple consecrations for multiple telesmata.
Before the ritual, follow the Kanones of hygiene (full bathing required), clothing (white preferred but the color of clothing may be altered to suit the entity communed with), and abstinence (lax both lax and strict required); stricter observance of the Kanones is encouraged for the first time one engages in Koinōnia with an entity, when consecrating a telesma for them, or for particularly important needs with them. A hormos should be worn for this ritual.
This ritual requires an bōmos. If a temporary bōmos is used, especially if it is a freestanding bōmos and not put against a wall, it may be oriented to an appropriate direction for the entity to be communed with:
East
Fire
Mars
The Sun in spring
The Moon if new
Pisces, Aries, or Taurus or any of their decans
North
Water
Jupiter
The Sun in summer (if in the northern hemisphere) or winter (if the southern hemisphere)
The Moon if waning
Gemini, Cancer, or Leo or any of their decans
Any of the fixed stars apart from the constellations, signs of the Zodiac, or decans
West
Air
Venus
The Sun in autumn
The Moon if full
Virgo, Libra, or Scorpio or any of their decans
South
Earth
Saturn
The Sun in winter (if in the northern hemisphere) or summer (if the northern hemisphere)
The Moon if waxing
Sagittarius, Capricorn, or Aquarius or any of their decans
Mercury may use any direction
However, as opposed to using predetermined directions, one may also orient the bōmos to face the position of the entity during the ritual (e.g. to the south if the Koinōnia is done for Mars while Mars is in the southern skies, or to the east if the Koinōnia is done for the first decan of Leo while Leo is rising).
The light is to be placed in the center of the bōmos. The incense should be placed before the light and closer to the edge of the bōmos where one is to sit, with some space before it. Other offerings should be arranged accordingly. If one already has a telesma or agalma of the entity, it should also be present for the ritual and placed accordingly:
A telesma should be put on a plate and with the light placed on top of it, with the telesma either directly underneath supporting the light or under a stand that can accommodate placing the telesma underneath it.
An agalma should be put behind the light and incense facing so that it shines in front of them facing the edge of the bōmos where one is to sit.
In the ritual below, except where specified otherwise, agalmata and psēphoi are both considered to be kinds of telesmata.
6.4.5. Ritual⁑
Note
Where indicated by KK., use the name of the entity to be communed with.
6.4.5.1. Prologue⁑
6.4.5.1.1. Lighting the Lykhnon⁑
If the Koinōnia is being done with a lykhnon which is to be lit for the Koinōnia and is to be extinguished afterwards, light it and recite (leader only):
I call upon you, o living God, radiant with illuminating fire,o unseen parent of the Sun, o invisible begetter of light!Give your strength to this fire, pour forth your light-giving power into this fire, and set to work your divine spark within this fire.Let it enter into this flame and fill it with your spirit, moving it by your holy breath and presence!O sacred fire, o light that shines with the light of God!Manifest your power for my knowledge, and let there be the light of knowing!Manifest your power for my rebirth, and let there be the light of life!Let the holy temple of almighty God within you open for me,let there be breadth, depth, length, height, fullness, and brightness, let the crown of your Sun-like radiance appear!May God shine forth through your flame and within your light, and may your light remain by me here in this place and now at this time!
6.4.5.1.2. Closing Off the Temple⁑
Standing by the doorway to the euktērion facing inwards, recite (leader only):
I speak now to only those allowed,I sing now with only those in the know, that only those allowed remain with me,that only those in the know join with me.Depart, depart, all those who are profane! No such person may have a foot in this place,no such person may hear the sacred mysteries.Depart, depart, all those who are profane;I shut and bar the doors from them.
Close the door.
6.4.5.1.3. First Salutation⁑
6.4.5.1.3.1. On One’s Own⁑
Recite:
May I live in wholeness and health!
6.4.5.1.3.2. If Others are Present⁑
The leader announces:
Hail to those whom the greeting is given with blessing,to my siblings, to holy children of God!
The leader recites:
May we live in wholeness and health!
All others present repeat the above as one.
6.4.5.1.4. Assertion and Confession⁑
Standing in front of but some distance away from the bōmos, recite:
I am one who stands in the House of Life.I am one who sees in the Chamber of Darkness.I am one who hears in the temples of divinity.I am one who speaks in the halls of humanity.I am one who loves mind, word, and knowledge.I am one who seeks order, truth, and wisdom. The wish of my heart is that which brought me here;may I be counted among the disciples of the gods!
Bow, then recite:
O gods who watch over and give life to humanity, receive me and deliver me to dwell with the eternal gods! For I have ever revered the gods whom my parents revealed to me,and as long as I live my life in the lot of the living,I always honor those who begot my body and of other human beings.I do and will not kill anyone,I do and will not steal anything entrusted to me,I do and will not do any other pernicious thing. But if I have transgressed in anything during this life,or have consumed of what was not licit,it was not of my own account, but because of this drive and desirethat arose from the pits of this body.
Move towards the bōmos and prepare to take your place at it.
6.4.5.1.5. Undertaking the Koinōnia⁑
Recite (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
I now undertake this Koinōnia with KK..
6.4.5.1.6. Foundation — Opening⁑
Clap, extend the arms out, and recite (leader only):
The glory of the All is God, both Divinity and Nature, for natural Divinity is renewed by Nature, and divine Nature is founded in Divinity.
Prostrate silently, setting intentions silently if desired, then sit or kneel at the bōmos.
6.4.5.1.7. Opening the Doors of Divinity⁑
Tip
Optional, but encouraged if done at a temporary bōmos.
Make an opening gesture with the hands above the bōmos, and recite (leader only):
Open, Heavens and Earth! Open, Day and Night!Open, East and West! Open, South and North!Open, winds and waters! Open, fire and stone! The two doors of the Earth are opened! The two doors of the Heavens are opened! The four doors of the horizon are opened! The four doors of the world are opened! The gods send forth their light through the doors;exalted be all the gods upon their great thrones! My face looks upon the gods on their thrones, and the gods on their thrones look upon me.I am about to sing the hymns of divinity;may my hymns be heard and my praise be accepted!
6.4.5.1.8. Prologue of Aid and Seven Requests⁑
Recite:
Almighty God, Lord, King, Master, Helper, hear me!
Recite, bowing at each “O God”:
O God, hear me my prayers.O God, save me from error.O God, cleanse me from vice.O God, protect me from danger.O God, rescue me from torment.O God, keep me from irreverence.O God, free me from ignorance.
If desired, prostrate and recite the Supplication of the Holy:
Holy God, Holy Strong, Holy Immortal, be merciful to me.Holy God, Holy Maker, Holy Forebear, be gracious to us.Holy God, Holy One, Holy Source, be propitious to us all.
6.4.5.1.9. Ritual Invocation of Hermēs⁑
Recite:
Hail to you, Hermēs, prophet and scribe and teacher!O thrice-great, great among the great, greatest beyond greatness! You who know the sacred mysteries, you who establish their utterances, you who distinguish truth from falsehood, you who witness the Light and Life of God,you who have entered into the goodness of God!Bless my thinking, bless my speaking, bless my working, o Hermēs,that all that I think, all that I say, and all that I do may be for Life, Light, and Goodness, that I may have your guidance and assistance in this Koinōnia with KK..
6.4.5.1.10. Invocation of the Agathos Daimōn⁑
Recite:
O my companion, o my genius, o my angel!Honor our bond, honor my destiny, honor God’s will!Manifest yourself to me as my Agathos Daimōn!Be faithful and steadfast for me!Be loving and passionate for me!Be my complete contentment!Be my total nourishment!Grant me every success and all attainment!Make my mind lucid and bright in all things!O never-born crown of the powers of divinity!O holy one, mighty one, immortal one,do not abandon me!O my friend, my savior, my protector, reveal yourself kindly to me as Truth!Join yourself to me that I may join myself to youas One, in One!
6.4.5.1.11. Shining Prayer⁑
Recite:
O God! I greet you and call upon you, eternal and unbegotten, you who are One,you who alone hold together and surround the whole creation of all things, you whom none understand, you whom all daimones fear, you whom the gods worship, you whose name not even the gods can utter!O God, you who are greater than all,you who are the creator of all,you who see all and are not seen, you who hear all and are not heard!O God, you who gave to the Sun all power and gloryand to the Moon the privilege to have fixed courses, yet who made the Sun to rise and set and the Moon to wax and wane, that none can compare them with your true glory!O God, you who took nothing from your own creation, but created all things that exist!O God, you who took nothing from the firstborn darkness, but apportioned all things that they might be equal! For it is with you that both order and light arose, and it is by you that all things were arranged.O God, all of your creation is subject to you,you whose true form whom none can truly see,you who yet change into all forms!Hear me and help me, o Lord, joyful and willing, faultless and unflawed, who pollute no place,King of kings, Daimōn of daimones, Aiōn of aiōnes, God of gods,by your Glory and Holiness and Beauty and Goodness, for I call upon you and bear witnessto the unsurpassed mystery of your name now and forever. ※
6.4.5.2. Purification of Water⁑
If the cup of water is not a loibeion, or if the Purification of Water was not already recited over a the loibeion after filling it with fresh water, then lift up the cup above the bōmos and recite (leader only):
O sweet water, fresh water, cool water that appeases the gods, you are a gift to the world and to me from the gods! The heavenly gods give the rain; the earthly gods give the seas;the mighty kings give the rivers; the beloved dead give the springs. As water from dew, you adorn the Earth and permit things to grow;as water from clouds, you adorn the Heavens and permit things to flourish.O water from the primordial water, o water from which the first light sprang, for the sake of purity and becoming pure, be purified!
6.4.5.3. Beautification of Oil and Anointing⁑
Recite over the oil (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
You are fine and you gleam with your fineness. You are fresh and you pour with your freshness. You are fragrant and you expand with your fragrance. You are clear and you coat with your clarity.Fine and refined as the sea, fresh and refreshed as the earth, fragrance and fragranced as the wind, clear and clarified as the sky!Be for me the bringer of beauty, o oil!Be pure, be wholesome, be holy for me, o oil!You are pure, and in purity you bring beauty! You are wholesome, and in wholeness you bring beauty! You are holy, and in holiness you bring beauty! You are for me the bringer of beauty, o oil,and in beauty you bring all virtue and goodness!
If a telesma for the entity is present, then, using the fingers of one hand, dab the telesma with the oil. Let this energy flush any darkness or detritus in yourself, replacing and filling yourself instead with the goodness and purity of their essence, surrounding you with their presence, and transforming the area around you into a likeness of their own domain.
Open up your heaven to me, o KK.! Open up your heaven to me, that I may rise into it, abide within it, and rise beyond it to yet higher heavens according to divine providence, to your grace, and to the grace of those above you!
Breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply. Allow the domain and heaven of the entity open up beyond the area for you, and let it draw you into it as it draws closer to you and overlays the area around you with its expanse.
For a last time, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply. If desired, continue breathing deeply and intoning the epōdē several times, intoning it melodically if possible, to better settle into the connection with the entity.
6.4.5.12. Communion⁑
Engage in communion with the entity as desired. Discuss with them, learn from them, ask for their help, recite hymns to the entity, receive induction into their spheres, receive empowerment by their energies, and whatever else you wish to do with them that they might agree to.
Although not required, it is encouraged to have a pen and paper at hand to take quick notes from the communion for any important points that should be remembered with priority afterwards.
Communion may continue for as long as desired by the mutual agreement of both you and the entity, but it is generally preferred to not keep them into an inappropriate time, e.g. past the current planetary hour for a planet.
6.4.5.13. Libation⁑
Whenever it feels appropriate to do so during the communion, whether immediately after the connection or immediately prior to the dismissal (but before the consecration of a telesma if one is to be done), request the entity bless the cup of water to be shared as a libation. Holding the cup above the bōmos with both hands, recite (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
O KK., as I have filled this cup with water, so too fill it with your blessing! As God filled the cosmos with life and light and spirit, so too fill me with your life and light and spirit as a blessing! Pour your life into this cup, pour your light into this cup, pour your spirit into this cup! Proclaim your grace upon this cup, and let this water become an elixir of your blessing! As I drink of this draught that I lift up to you for you to bless, so too may you nourish me, purify me, and empower me with your blessing!
Continuing to hold the cup aloft, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply. Allow the presence of the entity to flow into the cup, filling it with their power as it is filled with water, transforming it in color and scent and taste and texture and light into their own refined liquid essence.
Lower the cup, but still hold it aloft. Dip the forefinger of one hand into the water and flick it upwards above the head, reciting (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
An offering to the Heavens from whence I come.
Dip the forefinger of the same hand into the water and flick it downwards to the side, reciting (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
An offering to the Earth from whence I am born.
Dip the forefinger of the same hand into the water and flick it onto the bōmos (as well as on other offerings of drink, food, flowers, etc. if any are present), reciting (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
An offering to KK. by whom and to whom and with whom I am lifted up.
Hold the cup up with both hands above the bōmos in front of you and recite (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed):
As I drink this draught from this cup, so too may I be filled with your life and light and spirit for good, that you may join yourself to me that I may join myself to you as one in One, all the days of my life! Hail to you, KK.!
Continuing to hold the cup aloft, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply.
Put the cup of water down. With the fingertips of both hands, dip them into the cup, then wipe the hands together both front and back. Dip the fingertips into the water, then wipe the eyes, ears, nostrils, lips, forehead, temples, back and front of the neck, and heart. Dip the fingertips into the water, then sprinkle them onto the feet. Dip the fingertips into the water, then wipe the hands together both front and back once more. If others are present, the leader dips the fingertips into the water and sprinkles water onto the forehead, mouth, and heart of all others present. Hold the cup aloft once more, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply.
If performed alone, drink at least half but not the whole contents of the cup, then put the cup back on the bōmos. For the first breath after drinking, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in again deeply.
If performed in a group, the leader first drinks at least one mouthful of water from the vessel, whether directly or poured into a separate cup, being sure that some water in the vessel remains. All others present are to do the same, whether directly or poured into a cup for them. Everyone is to drink as one; for the first breath after drinking, breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in again deeply.
The rest of the water may be used for consecrations or for sipping throughout the ritual, but should be entirely consumed by the end of the ritual while the entity is still present.
If drink and food were also offered to the entity, have a small portion of each as a communal meal with the entity with their blessing.
6.4.5.14. Consecration⁑
In general, before a telesma of any form or type is to be consecrated, the entity must confirm that it may be done under their auspices. In communion, ask before proceeding, including the manner of consecration, what is needed to perform it, and how to maintain and store the telesma after its consecration; if divination tools are available, they may be used to ascertain the will of the entity to determine whether and how to proceed.
6.4.5.14.1. Initial Charge of Consecration⁑
Breathe in deeply, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long full exhale, then breathe in deeply.
Holding the telesma above the bōmos with both hands, recite the appropriate declaration (leader only, changing personal pronouns if needed).

By this psēphos, may I obtain your answers to my questions and your advice in my matters according to its significations as the mark of <title>: <significations…>.
Announce the name of the divinatory title (e.g. “Nyks” for the Moon) and list its high-level significations according to the descriptions (e.g. “a negative answer, instability and constancy, short-term developments or effects…”). Afterwards, recite:
Consecrate and empower this psēphos for me, for the entire and glorious time of my life! Come to me for this work, o KK., for I know you and you know me, for I am you and you are me!

Come to me for this work, o KK., for I know you and you know me, for I am you and you are me!
6.4.5.14.2. Cleansing of Water for Consecration⁑
Holding the telesma in one hand, dip the fingertips of the other hand into the cup and sprinkle a small amount of water onto each side or face of the telesma. Rub the telesma all over with the water with both hands, especially on its eyes or mouth if present, then gently wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
Holding the telesma above the bōmos with both hands, recite:

Set the telesma down, preferably directly under the primary light for the ritual if possible, or otherwise in its light; if the telesma has a face or other distinct front side, have it face the light, or at least facing upwards for the light to shine upon it. If an extra light is available and not yet lit for the new telesma, it may be set on top of the telesma and lit; if doing so, breathe in, then intone the appropriate epōdē with a long, full exhale upon doing so.
6.4.5.15. Dismissal⁑

It is you who gives us fire, and through the fire light;it is you who gives us light for our eyes and our hearts.I put out this lamp that shines with your holy fire, not to quench your light nor to stem your blessing, but for the safety and preservation of my life.As I put out this flame, grant me your Light forever, for yours is the light that can never truly be extinguished.Go forth from this lamp, o holy light of the highest God;depart, holy brightness, and let your flame be scattered, but let your light always dwell within me as a lamp in my soul, that I too may always shine with the holy light of the highest God.
Extinguish the lykhnon.
